Spiritual Triage

Immediate Help: If you are currently in physical danger, feeling suicidal, or experiencing a mental health emergency, please call 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room. Spiritual triage begins with staying alive.

Welcome.

Spiritual triage is for anyone who feels unsteady, unsure, or overwhelmed.

If you are coming to faith for the first time, returning after drifting, or recovering from spiritual hurt, this page gives you what you need to regain your footing. You do not need to have everything figured out. You do not need to pretend you are strong. You only need to take the next honest step toward Christ.

Think of this as spiritual first aid. A calm, steady space where you can recover, receive truth, and move forward with confidence.

What is the Gospel?

The gospel is not advice on how to be a better person. It is the announcement that God has acted in Jesus Christ to save sinners.

  • The Problem: We are separated from God because of our sin.

  • The Solution: Jesus lived the life we failed to live and died the death we deserved. He rose from the dead in victory.

  • The Promise: Anyone who turns from sin and trusts in Him is forgiven, restored, and made new.

Salvation is a gift of grace received through faith. Following Jesus means learning to trust Him, obey Him, and love Him with your whole life. This is the beginning of true freedom.

Where to Begin in the Bible

The Bible is not a puzzle to solve but a voice to listen to. Do not rush.

1. You need a translation you can understand. A clear Bible helps you grow faster than a difficult one. We recommend the NLT (New Living Translation) first because it is simple, accurate, and very easy to read. The CSB (Christian Standard Bible) is also excellent for clarity and faithfulness. The NIV (New International Version) is another reliable and readable choice.

Avoid translations that feel too rigid or old fashioned. KJV uses Elizabethan English and can be hard for new believers to follow.

You can read all of these for free on the YouVersion Bible App.

2. Where to start? Start with the Gospel of John. It was written specifically so that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, and that by believing you may have life in His name.

3. How to Read (The S.O.A.P. Method) If you stare at a page and don't know what to do, use this simple method with a notebook:

  • S - Scripture: Read one chapter slowly. Choose one or two verses that stood out to you and write them down.

  • O - Observation: What is happening in this text? Who is speaking? What does this teach you about who God is or what He is like?

  • A - Application: How does this truth change how you live today? Is there a promise to trust, a command to obey, or a sin to confess?

  • P - Prayer: Write a short prayer asking God to help you live out what you just read.

How to Pray When You Feel Lost

Prayer does not require perfect words. Prayer is honesty before God.

A Simple Framework If you don't know where to start, try these three steps:

  1. Thank Him for something (even small things like breath or safety).

  2. Confess something (be honest about where you have failed or struggled).

  3. Ask for something (needs for yourself or others).

When You Have No Words If your mind goes blank, pray the Lord’s Prayer slowly, making it your own:

"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." (Matthew 6:9-13)

How to Find a Healthy Church

Community is essential for healing, but you need a safe environment.

Look For:

  • Pastors who are humble, trustworthy, and committed to Scripture.

  • A community that prays, serves the poor, and values holiness.

  • Teaching that exalts Christ above everything.

Avoid:

  • Churches built on trends, hype, or celebrity personalities.

  • Environments marked by manipulation or guilt.

  • Teaching that compromises on biblical truth or morality.

Fighting Sin and Temptation

Sin feels powerful when you are isolated. To break the cycle:

  • Bring it to the Light: Confess it to God immediately. Secrets give sin power.

  • Seek Accountability: Find one mature Christian you can be honest with.

  • Change Your Environment: Remove the things that feed temptation.

  • Be Patient: You are not defined by your failures. Growth is slow. The Holy Spirit gives strength to resist, stand, and overcome.

Common Questions

What if I doubt? Doubt is normal. It is not the opposite of faith; it is often part of the journey. Bring your questions to God and other believers rather than hiding them.

What if I feel far from God? Feelings rise and fall like the tide. God is steady like the shore. Do not rely on your emotions to tell you the truth; rely on Scripture and prayer.

How do I know I am saved? Salvation is grounded in the promise of Christ, not your performance. If you trust Him, He keeps you. Look at Him, not at yourself.

Should I be baptized? Yes. Baptism is an act of obedience and a public declaration of your new life in Christ. Scripture speaks of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which happens the moment you believe, but water baptism is the outward sign of that inward reality. Being immersed in water is a beautiful picture of dying with Christ and rising with Him. It draws a clear line in the sand about who you now are.

What is my purpose? Your purpose is not a mystery to be solved. It begins simply: Love God and learn to follow Him day by day.
